“Ties That Fly: Türkiye and the UK Forge Landmark Agreement for Typhoon Jets”
BAE Systems has conveyed endorsement for the establishment of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Republic of Türkiye and the UK Government regarding the prospective acquisition of Eurofighter Typhoon jets.
The agreement was officially executed today by Turkish Minister of National Defence, Yasar Güler, and UK Secretary of State for Defence, John Healey, during the International Defence Industry Fair in Istanbul.
Charles Woodburn, Chief Executive of BAE Systems, remarked: “This Memorandum of Understanding between the governments of Türkiye and the UK underscores the importance of their longstanding defence partnership through NATO and the crucial role Typhoon plays in security and defence across Europe and the Middle East.”
Typhoon is a versatile, advanced fighter aircraft, currently operational with nine air forces worldwide, and is acclaimed for its exceptional performance, reliability, availability, and survivability. The jet assumes a central role in NATO missions and provides air policing along Europe’s eastern borders. In 2023 and 2024, Typhoon jets accomplished 80% of the operational missions undertaken by Eurofighter partner nations—Germany, Italy, Spain, and the UK—highlighting the operators’ confidence in its capabilities.
BAE Systems occupies a crucial role in the development, manufacturing, and maintenance of Typhoon jets for diverse air forces globally, with a significant portion of the operations conducted at the company’s facilities in Lancashire.
The program yields substantial economic advantages for the UK, supporting approximately 21,000 jobs on average, including highly skilled engineering roles. It is a remarkable success in the realm of exports, generating £1.4bn in international sales annually and contributing around £1.6bn to the economy. BAE Systems will continue to work closely with the governments of Türkiye and the UK to conclude an agreement for the procurement of Typhoon aircraft and associated supplies in the near future.
