Fincantieri Unveils New Names for Indonesian Navy’s Dual-Purpose Vessels in Grand Ceremony
The ceremony for renaming the two MPCS (Multipurpose Combat Ship/PPA) vessels sold to the Indonesian Navy took place today at Fincantieri’s shipyard located in Muggiano (La Spezia). These naval ships are a segment of the agreement established by the Group in 2024, valued at around 1.18 billion euros.
The event was graced by attendees such as Biagio Mazzotta, Chairperson of Fincantieri; Dario Deste, General Director of Fincantieri’s Naval Vessels Division; Admiral Muhammad Ali, Head of The Indonesian Navy, and Admiral Giuseppe Berutti Bergotto, Deputy Chief of Staff of the Italian Navy. Their presence highlighted the robust defense partnership between the two countries.
Initially constructed as the fifth and sixth units for the Italian Navy, the two vessels, previously designated “Marcantonio Colonna” and “Ruggiero di Lauria,” have been re-christened KRI BRAWIJAYA-320 and KRI PRABU SI LI WANG 1-321.
This procurement agreement emerges from the interest sparked during the promotions of the MPCS/PPA vessels “Francesco Morosini” and “Raimondo Montecuccoli” in Indonesia in 2023 and 2024, respectively. It signifies a notable milestone in the strategic relationship between Fincantieri and the Indonesian Ministry of Defense. Constructed at Fincantieri’s integrated Riva Trigoso-Muggiano yard, these vessels will represent the largest combat ships in the Indonesian Navy, enhancing stability in the Indo-Pacific region and protecting Indonesia’s national interests.
The MPCS/PPA constitutes a highly adaptable class of vessel intended to execute a myriad of missions, encompassing frontline combat operations, maritime surveillance, rescue, and civil safety initiatives.
The delivery of the two vessels to the Indonesian Navy is anticipated in 2025.
