Leonardo and Nexter, a division of KNDS, have collaboratively initiated a development program focused on launching a novel Gun Pod for the M-346 Fighter Attack (FA).
Following a fruitful feasibility assessment which proved the potential of integrating a Link & Case Recovery (LCR) system into the M-346 FA, Leonardo and Nexter, a division of KNDS, have opted to advance a collaborative development initiative by incorporating a new 20mm cannon pod into the M-346 FA.
A 20 mm cannon presents a superior option compared to 12.7 / .50 caliber regarding range, accuracy, and final effect. The 20M621 weapon solution, designed for seamless integration, operation, and maintenance, is a NATO caliber and ITAR-free solution tailored for aerial applications. Similar to other armaments and systems crafted and produced by Nexter for the air domain, it is lightweight, offering both efficiency and high performance.
Dario Marfè – Senior Vice President of Commercial, CSS&T & Proprietary Programs Business at Leonardo Aircraft stated: “Leonardo firmly believes that Nexter is the ideal ally. Integrating Nexter’s 20 mm gun pod will enhance the combat readiness of the M-346 FA in Homeland Defense, COIN, and CAS/Close-In Combat operations, thanks to an ITAR-free solution suitable for a diverse clientele worldwide.”
Philippe Reynes – Head of Weapon Systems and Turrets Programs at Nexter Systems remarked: “We take pride in the trustful relationship we have cultivated with Leonardo by giving due consideration to the unique challenges faced by aerial platforms. For instance, the safety of these platforms is assured as our pod retrieves all links and casing post-firing. Moreover, the NC621 is mechanically optimized to ensure maximum accuracy for the operator. This system exemplifies our proficiency as a medium caliber armament manufacturer.”
Nexter, a significant player in the firearms function within the aeronautical field, is among the few suppliers authorized to develop and manufacture Medium Caliber guns and munitions.
The M-346 FA is a ‘light combat’ variant of the M-346 advanced trainer with versatile capabilities incorporating close air support missions, even in urban settings, battlespace air interdiction for national defense, and tactical reconnaissance. The M-346 FA retains all the characteristics of a training aircraft while incorporating new-generation equipment and sensors, rendering it a formidable operational solution in the light combat arena.
The aircraft features a cutting-edge multi-mode radar system: a reliable, high-performance solution delivering exceptional accuracy and enabling optimal system modularity. The M-346 FA is safeguarded by an all-encompassing passive defense system (DASS – Defensive Aids Sub-System), while the integrated communications network and tactical datalink (TDL), which can also be adapted to a variant compliant with NATO standards, guarantee the utmost interoperability. The M-346 FA can accommodate various types of armaments and external loads, including air-to-air and air-to-surface munitions (such as IR, radar, and/or laser/GPS-guided munitions), gun pods, and target reconnaissance and designation pods, integrated with Helmet Mounted Displays (HMD).
The integrated on-board tactical training simulation system – Embedded Tactical Training System (ETTS) – can also be utilized for advanced and pre-operational training, providing a comprehensive array of simulated in-flight training operations in conjunction with the Integrated Training System (ITS) of the M-346, which features Live, Virtual, and Constructive (LVC) functionalities. The M-346 FA’s capability for aerial refueling permits it to execute long-range missions necessitating enhanced autonomy and high endurance. The M-346 FA enables operators to perform multiple roles using a single platform. For instance, the aircraft can efficiently undertake Aggressor and Companion Trainer missions, offering users a highly adaptable platform for today’s swiftly evolving landscape.
