Spanish Defense Ministry Secures Trio of Airbus A330 MRTT Aircraft
The Spanish Ministry of Defense has finalized the official request for procuring three Airbus A330 Multi-Role Tanker Transport aircraft (MRTT).
According to the contract, the delivery of the initial aircraft in transport configuration is expected in the upcoming days, followed by its transformation to MRTT in 2024. The delivery of the first fully modified aircraft is anticipated in 2023, with the third and final unit arriving in 2025.
The agreement encompasses essential support elements such as spare parts, ground handling equipment, training, and in-service assistance throughout the contract duration.
The aircraft, sourced from Iberia, will undergo conversion into military tanker transport at Airbus’ facilities in Getafe, Spain. It will be outfitted with a cutting-edge hose & drogue refueling system and a specialized Medical Evacuation (MEDEVAC) kit. The A330 MRTT fleet will be operated by the Spanish Air Force’s 45 Wing, stationed at Torrejón Air Base in Madrid.
‘The incorporation of the A330 MRTT into its fleet enables the Spanish Air Force to acquire a vital and established capability, enhancing and supporting international operations, alongside medevac missions, where the aircraft played a crucial role during the global Covid-19 pandemic,’ stated Jean-Brice Dumont, Executive Vice President Military Aircraft at Airbus.
The A330 MRTT is the sole next-generation strategic tanker and transport aircraft currently flying and available on the market. With a substantial basic fuel capacity of 111 tonnes / 245,000 lb derived from the renowned A330-200 airliner, it empowers the A330 MRTT to excel in Air-to-Air Refueling operations without needing additional fuel tanks.
Thanks to its broad fuselage design, the A330 MRTT can also serve as a dedicated transport plane, accommodating up to 300 troops or a payload of up to 45 tonnes/99,000 lb. Additionally, it can be swiftly reconfigured to include light and intensive care units for Medical Evacuation (MEDEVAC).
Having surpassed 250,000 flight hours, the A330 MRTT has achieved 51 deliveries to 13 international clients.
