Spain Welcomes Its Inaugural A400M from Airbus Defence and Space

Aircraft Departure from Seville to Enhance Zaragoza Base Operations

The Spanish Air Force proudly announces the acquisition of its inaugural Airbus A400M, marking a significant advancement in the nation’s air mobility capabilities. This state-of-the-art airlifter is set to revolutionize Spanish military aviation.

Today’s formal handover of the first out of 27 ordered A400M aircraft secures Spain’s position as the sixth nation to operate this cutting-edge airlifter.

During a brief ceremony at the Airbus Defence and Space final assembly line (FAL) in Seville, representatives from the Spanish Air Force and the Ministry of Defence officially accepted the aircraft, designated MSN44.

Fernando Alonso, Head of Military Aircraft at Airbus Defence and Space, expressed: “Today marks a significant milestone for everyone involved in the A400M program, especially the dedicated workforce in Seville who made this aircraft a reality. Each delivery is vital, but handing over the first unit to Spain is particularly gratifying. I extend my gratitude to our employees, OCCAR, and our Spanish clients for reaching this achievement.”

In service, the A400M will replace the aging C-130 fleet, offering unparalleled flexibility by transporting approximately double the cargo over the same distance or the same load twice as far. Furthermore, it can function as a tactical air-to-air refueling platform for various transport aircraft, including other A400Ms.

This remarkable aircraft combines the ability to cruise at jet-like speeds and altitudes over long distances with the capability to operate from short, unprepared airstrips near conflict zones or disaster areas, thanks to its four powerful engines and innovative aerodynamic design.

Under a contract signed in September, Spain will receive 14 aircraft delivered steadily until 2022, with the remaining 13 scheduled for delivery starting in 2025.

The A400M fleet will be stationed at Zaragoza in Northeast Spain, bolstering the heavylift segment of the transport force alongside the medium C295 and CN235, as well as the light C212 aircraft—all manufactured by Airbus Defence and Space. The first unit, MSN44, is set to make its journey to Zaragoza shortly.
