Kongsberg Lands Groundbreaking Partnership for Advanced Supersonic Strike Missile (3SM)

Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace (KONGSBERG) has today secured a contract with the Norwegian Defence Materiel Agency (NDMA) for the initial development phase of the revolutionary German-Norwegian missile system, the Supersonic Strike Missile (3SM).

The Supersonic Strike Missile signifies a state-of-the-art missile system anticipated for deployment on future maritime vessels starting in 2035. KONGSBERG and Norway boast an impressive legacy in refining advanced missile systems, and the evolving system will aid in maintaining and enhancing the existing proficiency in missile technology. The initial development phase is estimated to be valued at up to 1.5 billion NOK.

“The 3SM missile project highlights how international and industrial collaborations strengthen the defense capacities of Norway, Germany, and allied nations. Close cooperation among leading firms, governmental organizations, and academic entities lays the foundation for innovation, job opportunities, and reinforces our position as a leading missile producer globally,” states Eirik Lie, President of Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace.

KONGSBERG has been appointed as the principal contractor and industry frontrunner, with significant contributions from German and Norwegian subcontractors. KONGSBERG, Diehl Defence, and MBDA Deutschland have joined forces in a collaboration to carry out the development. The Norwegian Defence Research Establishment (FFI) and Nammo will also play crucial roles in this initiative.

“Norway has an illustrious heritage in crafting cutting-edge missile technologies, making it imperative to sustain and further fortify the existing expertise and prestige that Norway commands in missile innovation. Establishing Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace as a new collaborator and industry leader is a significant milestone in developing a powerful new weapon system for engaging maritime threats. KONGSBERG offers extensive and invaluable insight in this field,” explains Gro Jære, Director of the Norwegian Defence Materiel Agency (NDMA).

The latest supersonic missile is a collaborative German-Norwegian development project, with Norway spearheading the initiative. This anti-ship missile will play a vital role in securing sovereignty and safeguarding territorial integrity by enhancing the Armed Forces’ deterrence capabilities and improving their ability to tackle long-range threats. The missile system is intended for deployment on both Norwegian and German naval vessels, with potential applications for additional NATO allies and partners.

KONGSBERG and Norway initiated the Naval Strike Missile (NSM) in the 2000s. This missile system is currently employed by 13 countries, including Norway, Germany, and the USA. Once the 3SM is operational in the mid-2030s, it will serve as a highly effective complement to the NSM.
