Airbus Reveals Vision for Next-Gen Lightweight Combat Jet

Airbus Unveils Vision for Future Light Combat Aircraft

On October 16, the Spanish division of Airbus announced its innovative concept for a next-generation light combat aircraft, marking a significant advancement in the aerospace and defense industry.

Named the AFJT (Airbus Future Jet Trainer), this advanced trainer program is specifically designed for Spain, reinforcing the nation’s role as a leader in the aerospace sector. The initiative aims to enhance operational, industrial, and technological capabilities, ensuring Spain’s ongoing prominence in defense.

The new aircraft concept is a single-engine, transonic performance jet trainer, set to pave the way for the development of future pilots transitioning into the European Future Combat Air System (FCAS). Moreover, the AFJT platform could serve as a foundation for creating a light fighter jet and advanced attack unmanned aerial vehicles.

The trainer variant features a stepped two-seat cockpit and is available with or without an internal gun and multi-mode radar. It is also designed to accommodate in-flight weapon system simulators, offering an extensive library of synthetic targets and threat scenarios for realistic training.

A lightweight single-seat variant of the combat aircraft is planned for deployment in air defense and reconnaissance missions, enhancing operational versatility.

Financial forecasts suggest that every €100 million invested in the AFJT could create between 2,100 and 2,500 jobs in Spain, translating to an estimated return of about €36 million in taxes and social contributions. Spain would also benefit from royalties linked to international sales.

“The AFJT program is poised to be a vital economic driver, generating high-quality employment opportunities and contributing significantly to the national industry’s growth. The engineering and design knowledge gained through this initiative will open new avenues for future developments,” stated Fernando Peces.
