Bahrain Embarks on $350M Overhaul of 24 Extra AH-1W Attack Choppers

The State Department has made a decision endorsing a prospective Foreign Military Sale to the Government of Bahrain for essential equipment and services to refurbish Excess Defense Article (EDA) AH-1W multi-role helicopters. The anticipated total cost is $350 million. The Defense Security Cooperation Agency has submitted the necessary certification to inform Congress about this potential sale today.

The Government of Bahrain has expressed interest in purchasing equipment and services to upgrade twenty-four (24) Excess Defense Article (EDA) AH-1W multi-role helicopters. This includes services for enriching a full-motion Aircraft Procedures Trainer (APT), M272A1 missile launchers, spare T-700-GE-401 aircraft engines, additional components, operational support, instruction, publications, and other pertinent logistics and program assistance.

The projected total expenditure stands at $350 million.

This proposed acquisition will bolster the foreign policy and national security goals of the United States by enhancing the security of a Major Non-NATO ally that plays a vital role in promoting political stability and economic advancement in the Middle East.

The suggested sale will enhance Bahrain’s capacity to address existing and evolving threats, thereby improving its ability to execute maritime patrols, close air support, and search and rescue operations. Bahrain is well-positioned to integrate these defense assets and services into its military forces seamlessly.

The proposed distribution of these services and support will not disrupt the fundamental military equilibrium in the region.

The primary contractor will be Bell Corporation, located in Fort Worth, TX. There are no known offset agreements anticipated in relation to this potential sale.

Execution of this suggested sale will not necessitate the assignment of any additional U.S. Government or contractor representatives to Bahrain.

No negative impact on U.S. defense preparedness is expected as a consequence of this proposed sale.

Actual financial value may vary depending on final specifications, budget authority, and finalized sales agreements, if and when concluded.
