SAAB Secures New Contract for Sea Giraffe AMB to Boost U.S. Navy’s LCS Endeavors

This announcement showcases Saab’s ongoing expansion in the U.S. market. The Sea Giraffe AMB has been designated for the U.S. military as AN/SPS-77. The development will occur at Saab facilities located in Syracuse, NY, U.S. and Gothenburg, Sweden.

The Sea Giraffe AMB has been engineered and validated to fulfill U.S. Navy mission requirements for air and surface surveillance as well as air traffic management. Saab is honored to be a reliable partner to the U.S. Navy, supporting an ever-growing array of intricate radar missions across the fleet globally,” says Erik Smith, President and CEO of Saab Defense and Security USA.
To date, the Sea Giraffe has been integrated on the U.S. Navy’s Littoral Combat Ships LCS 2 (USS Independence), LCS 4 (USS Coronado), LCS 6 (USS Jackson), LCS 8 (USS Montgomery), LCS 10 (USS Gabrielle Giffords), and LCS 12 (USS Omaha). Additional systems are undergoing manufacturing and testing phases to align with LCS construction timelines. Saab has also secured a further contract from General Dynamics that includes options for the delivery of an additional 11 systems within the program through 2024.
In October 2017, the U.S. Navy declared it will deploy the Sea Giraffe AMB on the U.S. Coast Guard’s latest class of vessels, the Offshore Patrol Cutter (OPC). Furthermore, Saab is developing a variant of the Sea Giraffe AMB, referred to as AN/SPN-50, to meet the air traffic control specifications of the U.S. Naval Air Systems Command for aircraft carrier and amphibious assault class vessels.
The Sea Giraffe AMB is a versatile, medium-range, 3D surveillance radar system tailored for maritime applications. It provides concurrent air and surface monitoring and is well-suited for demanding naval conditions, from littoral zones to deep-water operations.
