Bell Textron Secures $272 Million Contract to Boost UH-1Y and AH-1Z Manufacturing in the Czech Republic
The U.S. Department of Defense has successfully awarded Bell Textron Inc. a substantial contract worth nearly $272 million for the production of UH-1Y and AH-1Z helicopters to benefit the Czech Republic.
This contract, issued by the Naval Air Systems Command, allows Bell Textron to manufacture and supply eight UH-1Y and four AH-1Z helicopters, reinforcing the defense capabilities of the Czech Republic.
Operations related to this contract will be conducted in Fort Worth, Texas (60%), and Amarillo, Texas (40%), with an anticipated completion date set for November 2023.
It is noteworthy that Foreign Military Sales funds amounting to $272,161,641 will be allocated at the time of this award, all remaining valid beyond the current fiscal year.
In December 2019, U.S. Defense Secretary Dr. Mark T. Esper and Czech Defense Minister Lubomir Metnar convened at the Pentagon to finalize the sale of H-1 helicopters, marking a significant milestone in defense cooperation.
The two leaders participated in a ceremonial signing of the agreement, which followed discussions on their enduring defense partnership and shared security concerns, as highlighted by defense officials.
This acquisition is set to replace the aging fleet of Russian Mi-24, Mi-35, and Mi-171 helicopters. Aligning with NATO standards, the Czech Republic aims to modernize its army by replacing 30-35 outdated helicopters currently in operation.
