Rome, 7 September 2016 – Leonardo-Finmeccanica has entered into an agreement with the Danish Defence Acquisition and Logistics Organisation (DALO) to deliver Vehicle Mission Systems for the land vehicles of the Danish Army. Based on the Leonardo solution, designed to fully adhere to the latest Generic Vehicle Architecture (GVA) technology, systems will be installed on various platforms, including the newly acquired Piranha V APC, new Armoured Patrol Vehicles, Wisent engineering vehicles, Leopard II MBTs, and CV90 IFVs. The initial production order under this framework agreement is anticipated shortly.

Leonardo was chosen as the preferred provider following two competitive user field assessments and thorough life-cycle cost and supportability evaluations. Modular mission systems will be customized for each vehicle type and role, with DALO enabled to select the combination of rugged imaging sensors most suitable for the task (up to complete 360° color and thermal imaging coverage), while enjoying the advantages of reduced maintenance expenses and simplified training inherent in modular systems with common components.

The mission system offered by Leonardo is based on the UK-led Generic Vehicle Architecture (GVA) standard, which is increasingly embraced by other allied nations. GVA represents a methodology for vehicle mission system design utilizing standard infrastructure and system control interfaces, facilitating easier user training, simplifying vehicle system upgrades, and lowering ownership costs through mission-specific configurations and life-cycle enhancements. The images captured by the mission system’s sensors are displayed on GVA multifunctional digital screens, delivering low-latency digital video. Sensor images can be shared across the vehicle, and multiple visuals can be shown on screen according to the user’s preferences to provide maximum information tailored to operational needs.

Due to the GVA design, other mission systems like high-powered mast-mounted sensors for reconnaissance and remote weapon stations for local defense can be seamlessly integrated and controlled through the existing displays, optimizing space and curbing costs related to procurement, training, and logistics. Most mission systems will incorporate Leonardo’s Driver Night Vision System (DNVS4), which provides both daylight color and thermal imagery to enable safe and confident operation for the vehicle’s driver and crew during both day and night, in all weather conditions. In addition to DNVS4 and the display screens, Leonardo is also supplying the Citadel Panoramic and Compact cameras through its collaboration with Copenhagen Sensor Technologies.

DNVS4 builds on Leonardo’s extensive expertise in delivering situational awareness systems to the UK MOD on vehicles such as Mastiff, Ridgback, Wolfhound, Challenger, and Warrior over several years. The company is also the preferred partner for the Italian Ministry of Defence for battlefield digitization initiatives. A prime illustration is Forza NEC, which devises solutions to fully integrate the diverse components comprising the Armed Forces—soldiers, vehicles, platforms, and systems—through the most advanced information and communication technologies.
