Boeing Unveils Future-Ready Interceptor Design for U.S. Missile Defense Initiative

The ‘lead’ Ground-based Interceptor was successfully launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base, California, on March 25, 2019, marking a milestone with the first-ever salvo engagement test of a threat-representative ICBM target. This test saw two GBIs effectively intercept a missile launched from the Ronald Reagan Ballistic Missile Defense Test Site at Kwajalein Atoll.

Boeing has presented its proposal to the U.S. Missile Defense Agency for the Next Generation Interceptor (NGI) competition, emphasizing its extensive expertise and over 60-year history in strategic missile and weapon system development.

“Boeing’s NGI proposal offers unparalleled performance, affordability, and reliability for both the nation and the warfighter,” stated Norm Tew, Vice President and General Manager of Missile and Weapon Systems, along with his role as Senior Executive at the Huntsville site.

Tew added, “Building on prior investments and established technologies, our innovative proposal presents a creative and compelling approach to effectively counter rapidly advancing threats.”

Should Boeing be selected, the company intends to leverage its proven capabilities alongside a top-tier industry team to ensure timely delivery of this unique offering to the warfighter.

“Boeing is strategically positioned to provide innovative solutions that significantly enhance this crucial missile defense capability, remaining committed to supporting the warfighter. Our extensive mission knowledge will be pivotal in designing, developing, and delivering a low-risk and highly effective solution for the Missile Defense Agency,” Tew remarked.

The NGI will play a critical role in maintaining a robust deterrence posture and ensuring the ongoing protection of the U.S. homeland against intercontinental ballistic missiles. A contract award is anticipated later this year.

With over six decades of experience in developing, testing, and deploying strategic missile and weapon systems, Boeing’s commitment to innovation and leadership will continue to drive the modernization and technological advancements of this system, crucial for national security. The Boeing NGI solution promises unmatched efficiency, affordability, and reliability, positioning it ahead of emerging threats.
