Boeing Delivers 14 Advanced Chinook Helicopters to Enhance UK Royal Air Force Operations

The U.S. Special Operations Command has granted Boeing a $578 million Foreign Military Sales agreement sanctioned by the U.S. Department of State to supply 14 extended-range Chinook helicopters to the UK Royal Air Force (RAF).

The upgraded range Chinook provides the RAF fleet with enhanced versatility to perform both domestic and international heavy-lift operations that only the Chinook can support.

“These Chinooks signify the future of heavy-lift capability, built upon an established foundation of advanced technologies and life cycle cost-effectiveness. This agreement for Block II aircraft paves the way for the next 60 years of Chinook excellence on the battlefield,” stated Andy Builta, Boeing’s Vice President and H-47 Program Manager.

Boeing and the RAF recently commemorated the 40th anniversary of the inaugural Chinook delivery to the UK. Additionally, Boeing will mark the 60th anniversary of the Chinook’s maiden flight later this year.

The United Kingdom will become the first foreign operator of a Block II Chinook, with deliveries scheduled to commence in 2026.

Boeing employs over 4,600 individuals in Pennsylvania dedicated to supporting the Chinook, the V-22 Osprey, the MH-139A Grey Wolf, along with various services and engineering initiatives. Including suppliers and contractors, Boeing’s endeavors support approximately 16,000 jobs across Pennsylvania.

The Chinook fleet serving the UK Ministry of Defence (MOD) sustains over 450 highly skilled positions throughout the UK. Boeing personnel provide maintenance and service support at Gosport, MOD Boscombe Down, and work closely with military staff at RAF Odiham.
