“New Horizons: British-Qatari Typhoon Squadron Takes to the Skies for Training”
Launch of the Royal Air Force and Qatar Emiri Air Force’s Joint Squadron
The first flights of the joint squadron between the Royal Air Force (RAF) and the Qatar Emiri Air Force have officially commenced.
Known as 12 Squadron, it is stationed at RAF Coningsby and operates the advanced Typhoon fighter jets. This establishment marks the UK’s first joint squadron since World War II, symbolizing strong international military partnerships.
Initially, the squadron was set to begin its flying training in March. However, the COVID-19 pandemic caused a delay in its schedule.
Defence Secretary Ben Wallace emphasized that the formation of this squadron showcases the UK’s longstanding friendship and commitment to Qatar.
Dr. Khalid bin Mohammad al Attiyah, Qatar’s Minister of State for Defence Affairs, described the inaugural flight as a significant milestone in military collaboration between the two nations.
A flag-raising ceremony held at the Lincolnshire base earlier this week celebrated the commencement of flying training.
Qatar is gearing up to receive 24 Typhoons, backed by a £5 billion contract with BAE Systems signed in 2017.
In anticipation of the aircraft’s arrival starting from 2022, Qatari personnel are currently receiving training from RAF pilots and engineers.
Wing Commander Chris Wright, the Officer Commanding 12 Squadron, shared with Forces News that the joint squadron aims to expand its Qatari elements, planning to train over 16 pilots in the coming years in preparation for their aircraft delivery.
“12 Squadron will continue to evolve, enhancing the complexity of our training while also undertaking deployments to the Middle East to support their national exercises,” he added.
Wright also noted that the training serves as a genuine exchange of ideas: “It would be naive to think we have nothing to learn from this collaboration.”
Established in July 2018, 12 Squadron is set to prepare for upcoming exercises by the end of the year.
