Embraer Unveils the Fourth C-390 Millennium Airlifter to Enhance Brazil’s Aerial Fleet
Embraer has successfully delivered the fourth KC-390 Millennium, a versatile multi-mission medium airlifter, to the Brazilian Air Force (FAB). This aircraft joins the three units already in operation and is scheduled for deployment by the First Troop Transport Group (1st GTT). All 28 aircraft ordered by FAB are optimized for aerial refueling missions.
Lieutenant-Brigadier Antonio Carlos Moretti Bermudez, Commander of the Brazilian Air Force, expressed, “Receiving our fourth KC-390 Millennium is a moment of great pride. This aircraft will enhance our operational capabilities across diverse missions in Brazil and internationally, similar to our first three aircraft. It has already showcased exceptional performance, particularly during Operation COVID-19.”
Jackson Schneider, President and CEO of Embraer Defense & Security, remarked, “The delivery of the fourth C-390 Millennium underscores its vital role in numerous humanitarian missions both domestically and abroad. The KC-390 is positioning itself as the tactical transport aircraft of this century, opening up new market opportunities critical for Embraer’s strategic vision in the upcoming years.”
Since the COVID-19 outbreak, FAB has utilized the KC-390 Millennium for logistical air transport, delivering essential supplies to combat the pandemic. Additionally, one of the airlift aircraft participated in a humanitarian mission to Beirut, Lebanon, in August to aid the local population.
On November 17, the Hungarian government formalized a contract for two KC-390 Millennium multi-mission transport aircraft, set up in air-to-air refueling (AAR) configuration. This acquisition is part of an initiative to enhance the capabilities of the Hungarian Defense Forces, particularly in tactical airlift, AAR, and medical evacuation roles, as well as other public service missions. Deliveries are expected to commence in 2023.
The Hungarian KC-390s will be the first globally to feature an Intensive Care Unit configuration, crucial for humanitarian operations. They are designed to refuel the Hungarian JAS 39 Gripen and other compatible aircraft, ensuring full NATO compatibility in both hardware and avionics.
In late October, the Portuguese Armed Forces (FAP) and Embraer completed the “Critical Design Review (CDR)” for the KC-390 Millennium jets ordered by Portugal. This crucial phase established the aircraft’s technical requirements, allowing Embraer to tailor the design. The Portuguese Government has contracted the purchase of five multi-mission airlifters to bolster FAP operations and enhance readiness for national missions, with deliveries also set to begin in 2023.
The C-390 Millennium, a collaborative project between FAB and Embraer, aims to redefine standards in tactical transport aircraft. It features mobility, a robust design, greater flexibility, advanced technology, and simplified maintenance.
The KC-390 Millennium flies faster and can carry more cargo than comparable military freighters, making it ideal for a wide array of mission scenarios. It requires fewer on-demand inspections and maintenance, coupled with highly reliable systems, reducing ground time and overall operating costs while maximizing availability and minimizing life-cycle expenses.
