General Dynamics Secures Contract for Next-Gen BLU-109 Penetrator Bomb Production
The U.S. Army Contracting Command, based in Rock Island, Illinois, has awarded a significant contract totaling $9.3 million to General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems. This agreement marks the initial production orders under a five-year, indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity contract for BLU-109 penetrator bomb bodies and their components. Notably, the contract could reach a potential value of $193 million if all orders are fulfilled.
The BLU-109 is recognized as an advanced 2,000 lb penetrator warhead, utilized by both the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Navy. Its single-piece, forged casing, made from high-grade materials, ensures enhanced effectiveness. Responding to increasing demand, the Army Contracting Command has tasked General Dynamics with developing a second source production capability for BLU-109 bodies and components.
“This new BLU-109 production line delivers a crucial resource during a period of rising operational needs, significantly reducing the risk of a single-point production failure. Our enhanced production capability will not only support the Air Force and Navy but also strengthen the vital industrial base,” stated Dan Paul, the vice president and general manager of Precision Systems at General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems.
