Giancarlo Mezzanatto has been designated as the Chief Executive Officer for Eurofighter Jagdflugzeug GmbH, the management entity for the Eurofighter Typhoon. His selection was made by the stakeholders of the Eurofighter GmbH consortium, and he will commence his duties on 1 May.
Giancarlo transitions to Eurofighter from Leonardo, where he has been engaged in various high-ranking positions, most recently acting as Senior Vice President for European Military Programmes. Previously, he held the title of Chief Operating Officer for Programmes at Eurofighter GmbH from 2019 to 2021.
This appointment aligns with Eurofighter GmbH’s tri-annual partner company rotation policy. He takes over from Carlo Mancusi, who sadly passed away in December 2022. Wolfgang Gammel, Eurofighter’s Chief Operating Officer for Programmes (COOP), has assumed the CEO responsibilities since early 2023 and will transfer duties to Giancarlo when he begins in May.
Andrea Thompson, Chair of the Eurofighter GmbH Supervisory Board, remarked: “We are thrilled to have Giancarlo return to Eurofighter as he steps into the Chief Executive Officer position. His extensive Eurofighter Programme background and expertise will be invaluable in the upcoming years.
“Giancarlo’s appointment comes after a demanding period for Eurofighter GmbH following the unfortunate passing of Carlo Mancusi. I wish to express my gratitude to the Eurofighter Board of Management for their commitment during this time and, especially, to Wolfgang Gammel, who undertook the CEO position during this transitional phase.”
Giancarlo will join the Eurofighter Board of Management and collaborate with Wolfgang Gammel, Chief Operating Officer for Programmes; Andy Eddleston, Chief Operating Officer for Capabilities; Gabriel Semelas, Chief Commercial and Financial Officer; and Giammarco Quaglia, Director of Business Support.
“In recent years, Eurofighter has secured and executed new contracts and enhanced capabilities. Together, we will persist in advancing the innovations of Eurofighter Typhoon, ensuring it remains the premier swing-role military aircraft in the world.”
Giancarlo embarked on his professional journey in the Italian Aerospace sector (Aeritalia) in 1987. He possesses a degree in Philosophy and a Master’s in Artificial Intelligence and Knowledge Engineering. The initial decade of his career was dedicated to the development of Artificial Intelligence applications for military initiatives.
