Greece Unveils Ambitious Defense Acquisition Plan
DEFEA – Defence Exhibition Athens stands out as a pivotal event, particularly in light of Greece’s recent announcement regarding significant arms acquisitions. Greek Prime Minister K. Mitsotakis emphasized the importance of “six emblematic decisions” aimed at enhancing the power, functionality, and effectiveness of Greek military capabilities. Here’s a breakdown of these transformative decisions:
- The Hellenic Air Force will bolster its fleet by acquiring a squadron of 18 Rafale fighter jets to replace older Mirage 2000 aircraft. These advanced fourth-generation jets are designed to enhance Greek deterrence, complementing the modernization of the F-16 fleet.
- The Hellenic Navy is initiating the procurement of four new multi-role frigates while simultaneously upgrading four existing MEKO frigates. The specifics regarding the ship designs remain undisclosed, though multiple countries are expressing interest in this tender. Additionally, the new frigates will be supported by four MH-60R (Romeo) naval helicopters.
- Comprehensive enhancements across all three branches of the military are underway. The Army will receive new anti-tank weapons, the Navy is set to acquire heavy-duty torpedoes, and the Air Force will be equipped with new guided missiles, ensuring each weapon system remains usable throughout its lifespan.
- In a move to strengthen personnel, Mr. Mitsotakis announced the recruitment of 15,000 military personnel over an initial five-year period. A re-evaluation of military training frameworks will allow recruits to gain certified skills at no cost.
- The revitalization of the Greek defense industry is also prioritized. American investments are currently modernizing the Elefsina shipyards, while a strategic investor is poised to join the Scaramanga shipyards. Moreover, the privatization of ELVO – Hellenic Vehicle Industry SA is set for completion soon, and the Hellenic Aerospace Industry is being restructured into an aircraft maintenance center for the region.
- The Armed Forces are enhancing their digital capabilities and fortifying protections against hybrid cyber threats. New systems will be implemented at all operational levels to guarantee secure communication and prompt mobilization.
DEFEA is set to spotlight significant advancements in Defence and Security, particularly regarding the revitalization of both Greek and European defense sectors. The exhibition will occur from 11 – 13 May 2021 at the Metropolitan Expo Exhibition Center in Athens International Airport, under the auspices of the Greek Ministry of Defence – Directorate of Defence Equipment and Investment (GDDIA). Organized by ROTA Exhibitions Greece in collaboration with the Hellenic Defence Material Manufacturers Association (SEKPY), DEFEA is well-positioned to showcase the strengths of a diverse array of Greek defense enterprises alongside established international defense industry leaders.
Amid heightened geopolitical tensions in the broader MENA Region, discussions surrounding security and defense have intensified. Greece, emerging from the Euro-crisis and a prolonged period of fiscal stagnation, is committed to enhancing its defense capabilities while implementing a long-term armament program. DEFEA is honored to provide a platform for the excellence of Greek defense companies, reinforcing their position on the global stage.
