Exciting Advances in the Gripen F Joint Initiative: Insights from Eva Söderström

The Gripen F project has reached an exciting new milestone with the initial metal cut occurring in March this year. This pivotal event not only signifies the beginning of Gripen F production but also highlights a significant achievement for the Brazilian Gripen program, involving both Saab and its local partners.

“We are engaged in a variety of activities and collaborations—from detailed manufacturing and system development to flight testing and research projects incorporating Brazilian defense academics. The Gripen F development is a crucial aspect of this partnership,” remarked Eva Söderström, Head of Saab Industrial Cooperation, during a recent webinar featuring top Indian defense journalists.

This collaborative Gripen F development initiative includes prominent Brazilian companies such as Embraer, AEL Sistemas, Akaer, and Atech. At the Gripen Design and Development Network (GDDN) in Gavião Peixoto, São Paulo, nearly 400 engineers are focused on advancing the Gripen F aircraft development. Established in 2016, the GDDN aims to propel the Gripen E/F progression in Brazil while creating high-tech job opportunities, transferring skills, and cultivating a sustainable export market.

“The GDDN will empower the Brazilian Gripen Program to enhance the Air Force’s autonomy, offering logistics support, weapon system integration, and maintenance services for both Gripen E and F, thereby significantly upgrading the Brazilian Air Force’s (FAB) aircraft development capabilities,” added Eva Söderström.

In 2014, Saab secured a contract to supply 36 Gripen fighters to Brazil, comprising 28 Gripen E variants and 8 Gripen F models. The Gripen F features advanced designs similar to the Gripen E but includes additional seating, displays, and controls for a second crew member.

Deliveries of the Gripen F fighters are anticipated to commence in 2023.
