Japan Expands Its Skies with Two Additional Boeing KC-46A Tankers

Boeing has secured a contract to supply two extra KC-46A Pegasus tankers to the Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF), elevating the total under contract for Japan to six. The first KC-46A tanker was delivered to Japan in October 2021, followed by a second in February 2022.

“The unparalleled adaptability and multi-role capabilities of the KC-46A tanker significantly bolster JASDF’s air mobility operations,” stated James Burgess, vice president and KC-46 program director. “The expanding global KC-46A fleet amplifies interoperability benefits for our clients, ensuring operational readiness and delivering value for their investment.”

Engineered to refuel all allied and coalition military aircraft in accordance with international refueling protocols, the proven Pegasus has successfully completed over 10,000 sorties, supplying millions of pounds of fuel each month to friendly forces worldwide. Besides refueling, the KC-46A offers essential multi-role capabilities needed for the 21st century fleet, including data connectivity and the transport of personnel, cargo, and aeromedical evacuation.

“This new KC-46A acquisition strengthens the U.S.-Japan security partnership to enhance peace and stability throughout the Pacific region,” commented Will Shaffer, president of Boeing Japan. “Boeing takes pride in our enduring collaboration with Japan, and we look forward to supporting the country’s KC-46A fleet that will serve for many years ahead.”

Boeing has delivered a total of 67 KC-46A tankers, comprising 65 for the U.S. Air Force and two for Japan. Constructed on the reliable 767 airframe with over 1,200 units delivered—and with more KC-46A aircraft in operation globally than any tanker aside from the Boeing-built KC-135—the Pegasus also guarantees vital mission reliability for international clients.

The contract was assigned by the U.S. Air Force via the Foreign Military Sales procedure. Boeing manufactures KC-46A aircraft for the U.S. Air Force, the JASDF, and other allied nations on its 767 production line in Everett, Washington. Additionally, Boeing’s Japanese associates produce 16 percent of the KC-46A airframe structure. The JASDF also operates four earlier generation Boeing-built KC-767 aircraft.
