Unveiling the “Tornado-S”: A Groundbreaking Jet Projectile Debut at “ARMY 2020”
Showcasing Innovation: The 300-millimeter Guided Missile ‘Tornado-S’
This year marks the debut of the advanced 300-millimeter guided missile system, the “Tornado-S,” engineered by NGO “Splav” named after A.N. Ganichev. It will be prominently featured at the Rostec holding’s “Technodinamika” exhibition.
The multiple rocket launcher system, “Tornado-S,” was highlighted during the Victory Day Parade on June 24. JSC “Technodinamika” plans to display approximately 300 innovative samples at the upcoming “ARMY 2020” forum.
As an evolution of the Russian “Smerch” system, the “Tornado-S” boasts significantly enhanced tactical and technical specifications. Core components include a modernized combat vehicle derived from the BM RSZO “Smerch” and cutting-edge guided missile technology.
The missiles are outfitted with fragmentation and dual-purpose combat elements featuring an integrated satellite navigation system. Each round receives individualized flight instructions programmed by the control unit utilizing a strapdown inertial navigation system.
“The control unit allows the customization of parameters for each missile regarding flight range and trajectory to fulfill various mission objectives. Notably, the range of the “Tornado-S” projectiles exceeds 100 km, while accuracy is improved by 15-20 times compared to the “Smerch” rounds. Weighing over 800 kg, these missiles are capable of penetrating armor up to 140 mm,” emphasized Igor Nasenkov, CEO of “Technodinamika.”
Additionally, the exhibition will present a range of aviation bombing solutions from NGO ‘Basalt’. This includes the Fuel-Air-Explosive bomb ODAB-500 PMV, which outperforms all existing alternatives in its class. The ODAB-500 PMV is designed to neutralize industrial targets, destroy vulnerable equipment, and clear minefields—especially effective in mountainous terrains—applicable from both frontline aircraft and helicopters.
Rostec’s exhibition will also unveil an extensive selection of ammunition for tank, field, and naval artillery. Among the featured items are the latest 125 mm armor-piercing composite tank rounds – the 3VBM23 (“Lead-2”) and an experimental upgraded 3VBM17 (“Mango-M”). The latter boasts over 20% improved armor penetration compared to the standard round, making it capable of engaging a broad range of NATO armored vehicles from distances exceeding 2 km.
Beyond military advancements, defense enterprises are set to showcase their contributions to civilian sectors. For instance, the scientific-production association “Splav” has developed two state-of-the-art perfusion complexes. The LifeStream complex is designed to preserve the vitality of donor organs, significantly increasing the number of organs available for transplantation. The LifeStream ECMO complex can replace blood circulation in patients with acute heart failure, ensuring life-saving oxygen saturation during severe respiratory distress. This groundbreaking technology aims to enhance resuscitation efforts when traditional methods fall short, with official registration and pre-clinical trials slated for completion by the end of 2020.
In addition, JSC “POZIS” will display innovative household and medical refrigerators, as well as air-disinfecting irradiator-recirculators. These state-of-the-art devices play a crucial role in combating the COVID-19 pandemic, achieving a 99% disinfection rate of harmful bacteria and viruses, and ensuring the safety of premises during operation.
