Kelvin Hughes Unveils Cutting-Edge Radar Technology for Drone Detection
Kelvin Hughes Unveils Innovative Drone Detection System
A global leader in radar systems for security and surveillance, as well as maritime navigation, Kelvin Hughes proudly announces the launch of its cutting-edge drone detection system at the Home Office Security & Policing exhibition. The SMS-D stands out as the first integrated, medium-range radar-based surveillance system specifically designed to detect and track small aerial targets, contributing significantly to security measures.
In an era where drones pose new challenges to security, whether used with malicious intent or irresponsibly, the SMS-D is equipped to track real-time positions of these aerial threats. It ensures the safety of infrastructure, vehicles, and individuals, addressing potential risks from hostile observation or smuggling operations. Leveraging the robust SharpEye™ X-Band solid-state radar transceiver technology, this advanced system can detect drones from distances of up to 1.5 kilometers, enhancing security protocols.
Cost-effective and efficient, the SMS-D continuously updates critical data, such as bearing, distance, altitude, and velocity. As the latest innovation in the Kelvin Hughes SMS (Single Mast Solution) range, it can automatically identify targets through its advanced video tracking system, enabling rapid implementation of defensive measures.
The SMS system accommodates a diverse array of radar, optical, and thermal imaging devices, providing comprehensive 360˚ surveillance of site perimeters or borders. This feature ensures early detection of drones and other UAVs. The system can be permanently installed or vehicle-mounted to expand detection capabilities further.
During the official launch at the Security & Policing event, Kelvin Hughes will showcase the SMS-D within the Live Immersive Experience, offering attendees a ‘Journey through the Criminal Justice System’. The system will be positioned on a replica perimeter fence and integrated with Kelvin Hughes’ CxEye™ control and display software, consolidating data from multiple sensors into a user-friendly display. Additionally, demonstrations will occur in the vehicle display area (position X13).
Jonathan Field, Security Systems and Sensors Director at Kelvin Hughes, stated: “We’re eagerly anticipating the official launch of the SMS-D. As the first of its kind, this system represents a fully integrated solution of radar, electro-optic sensors, and software, delivering a sophisticated yet cost-effective answer to the growing threat of drone incursions. It exemplifies our longstanding commitment to world-leading innovation.”
