
Fincantieri Celebrates the Launch of the Stunning “Domenico Millelire” – Its Seventh PPA Marvel at Riva Trigoso!
Today heralded the launch of the seventh PPA (Multipurpose Combat Ship) “Domenico Millelire” at Fincantieri’s shipyard located in Riva Trigoso (Genova).
The occasion was attended by distinguished guests including Vice Admiral Giuseppe Berutti Bergotto, Deputy Chief of Staff of the Italian Navy, alongside Massimo Scialpi, Deputy Director of OCCAR. The event was facilitated for Fincantieri by Dario Deste, General Manager of the Naval Vessels Division. The ceremony was graced by Ms. Franca Millelire, a relative of Domenico Millelire, who served as the godmother.
This ship is an integral part of the revitalization initiative aimed at enhancing the operational capabilities of the Italian Navy fleet, receiving endorsement from both the Government and Parliament under the framework of OCCAR (Organisation Conjointe de Cooperation sur l’Armement, the international organization for collaboration in defense equipment).

Features of the PPA:
The PPA is an incredibly adaptable ship, engineered to perform a variety of functions, ranging from maritime surveillance and rescue operations to Civil Protection tasks. In its advanced configuration, it operates as a frontline combat vessel. Various combat systems will be featured: starting from a “soft” version designed for surveillance duties with augmented self-defense capabilities, to a “full” variant, outfitted for extensive defense operations. The ship also boasts the capability to operate high-speed crafts like RHIBs (Rigid Hull Inflatable Boats) up to 11 meters in length, utilizing lateral cranes or a hauling ramp located at the stern.

- Speed exceeding 31 knots
- Accommodates a crew of 171 personnel
- Equipped with a combined diesel and gas turbine plant (CODAG) along with an electric propulsion system
- Ability to supply potable water to shore
The PPA vessels are being fabricated at the Integrated Shipyard of Riva Trigoso and Muggiano, with deliveries expected to continue until 2026.
