Kongsberg Partners with the Norwegian Navy: A New Era of Innovation
Today, Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace AS (KONGSBERG) has finalized two agreements, totaling MNOK 1,426, with the Norwegian Defence Materiel Agency (FMA). KONGSBERG is set to supply a fresh collection of Naval Strike Missiles (NSM) for the Norwegian Navy’s frigates and corvettes. The current stockpile of missiles will undergo a series of maintenance procedures to enhance their operational lifespan and continue delivering cutting-edge defense capabilities for the Navy.
«The triangular partnership among KONGSBERG, the Norwegian Armed Forces, and the Norwegian Defence Research Establishment (FFI) is crucial for our capacity to create such sophisticated and intricate systems. We take great pride in establishing a maintenance agreement that will prolong the missile’s usability, ensuring that the Navy remains equipped with this vital capability. Contracts of this nature bolster KONGSBERG’s and FMA’s sustainability objectives, and assist in securing further employment opportunities, not just for our workforce, but also for our national subcontractors. We cannot manufacture nor deliver such advanced and cutting-edge products independently,” states Øyvind Kolset, Executive Vice President of Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace.
The Naval Strike Missile is a fifth-generation missile characterized by a low radar signature, designed for sea-to-sea or sea-to-land defense applications. With its outstanding performance capabilities, it can confront well-defended targets and has the capacity to penetrate the most sophisticated air defense systems.
NSM is equipped with integrated sensors to accurately identify targets for engagement and features a self-destruction function if it fails to find its intended target – a built-in safety measure that minimizes collateral damage.
