- This partnership represents a significant advancement in the modernization of air navigation infrastructure, enhancing transport services, public safety, and environmental protection.
- Leonardo helicopters offer cutting-edge technological features that ensure improved navigation, approach, and landing precision, especially under challenging weather conditions, making them the optimal choice for satellite navigation protocols developed by ENAV.
- Together, the two companies will create innovative solutions, procedures, and standards to optimize airspace usage in Italy and internationally.
Leonardo and ENAV have signed a groundbreaking Letter of Intent (LoI) in Italy, focusing on the modernization and safety enhancement of helicopter operations and airspace management through advanced navigation technologies. Their collaboration aims to provide helicopter operators with top-tier products and services in the field of instrument navigation while also updating critical infrastructures. Both partners demonstrate a strong commitment to reinforcing this vital national resource.
This innovative collaboration merges Leonardo’s expertise in designing, producing, supplying, and supporting state-of-the-art helicopters with ENAV’s proficiency in airspace management in Italy and beyond.
The agreement paves the way for the development and provision of integrated solutions tailored for both private and public sector operators, not just in Italy but also on an international scale. This partnership stands out as a pioneering initiative in the global aviation landscape and aligns with Italy’s objectives for sustainable infrastructure, modernization, and safety.
Currently, air navigation systems are primarily tailored for fixed-wing aircraft operations, somewhat limiting the capabilities and versatility of rotary-wing aircraft. Helicopters offer exceptional flexibility and maneuverability, supported by their vertical take-off and landing along with hovering capabilities.
Leonardo helicopters meet the latest certification standards and are equipped with advanced systems that facilitate the use of modern Performance Based Navigation (PBN) procedures. ENAV has been a leader in designing PBN procedures for both fixed and rotary-wing aircraft for many years.
PBN procedures enhance airspace efficiency and safety through the use of advanced satellite navigation, providing greater precision in navigation, approach, and landing, especially critical in adverse weather conditions. These procedures can either complement or substitute traditional land-based radio navigation systems.
Additionally, PBN procedures help reduce emissions and noise by optimizing flight paths and increasing operational efficiency. This technology benefits various applications, including passenger transport, emergency medical services, disaster relief, surveillance, and firefighting, allowing operations in all weather conditions and at any time. Its implementation significantly elevates flight safety, environmental protection, and the efficacy of public services.
Alessandro Profumo, Chief Executive Officer of Leonardo, stated, “This initiative underscores our dedication to bolstering Italy’s growth and competitiveness by enhancing a crucial infrastructure like our airspace and the regulatory systems governing it. We aim to push forward with innovation and digitalization, getting closer to future ‘urban air mobility’ scenarios. Through continuous modernization, we integrate our helicopter expertise with flight safety technologies, air traffic management systems, and space tech to create solutions that benefit mobility, safety, and environmental sustainability for communities. Italy’s industrial and technological prowess positions it as a leader in efforts like SESAR, setting a global benchmark.”
Paolo Simioni, Chief Executive Officer of ENAV, remarked, “We are proud of this agreement, showcasing the aviation industry’s capability to forge synergies that promote growth and modernization in flight systems, enhancing both efficiency and safety. Airspace serves as a vital infrastructure for economic growth in Italy and worldwide. Our investments in sustainable technological innovation reflect our commitment to the environment. Leonardo and ENAV are pivotal players in the technological and infrastructural progress of our sector, and this partnership is a testament to the talent and quality of ENAV’s workforce. I believe this collaboration will provide both entities with a competitive edge in the global market.”
