Leonardo Secures Deal for Slovenia’s Second C-27J: A Milestone with the General Defence Secretariat

The Acquisition Agreement falls under the G2G accord between Italy and Slovenia, aimed at enhancing bilateral collaboration between the two nations.

Leonardo, along with the Air Armaments and Airworthiness Directorate of the General Secretariat of Defence / National Armaments Directorate, has finalized an Acquisition Agreement to furnish the Slovenian Defence Ministry with a second C-27J Spartan aircraft, along with supplementary logistics and training support.

This agreement stems from the Italy-Slovenia Government-to-Government arrangement (G2G) ratified on 17 November 2021, which aims to bolster diplomatic relations between these two countries.

Dario Marfè, Senior Vice President of Commercial, CSS&T & Proprietary Programs Business of Leonardo’s Aircraft Division, remarked: ‘Deployed in the most demanding geographical, environmental, and operational contexts, Leonardo’s C-27J Spartan is an aircraft adept at executing a variety of defence and civil protection missions. With extensive experience collaborating with air forces globally, it represents the optimal solution for military transport operations, paratrooper and cargo airdrops, ‘last mile’ tactical troop assistance, special forces missions, medical evacuation on the battlefield, humanitarian support, and disaster response.’

The C-27J Spartan Next Generation is equipped with advanced avionics in a glass cockpit featuring five multi-functional color displays, a tactical radar system for transport missions, and superior communication technologies. The system architecture guarantees interoperability with other transport aircraft. It can be easily integrated with in-flight refuelling, self-defence mechanisms, secure communications, and ballistic protection systems, enabling operations in high-threat scenarios for transporting goods, light vehicles, and personnel wherever necessary.

With numerous roll-on/roll-off mission kits and easily deployable and transportable systems, the C-27J can be swiftly adapted to meet the requirements of its current mission. The innovative Fire Fighter configuration, previously acquired under the intergovernmental accords between Italy and Slovenia, features the second-generation palletised MAFFS II (Modular Airborne Fire Fighting System) from United Aeronautical Corporation, a global leader in cutting-edge aerial firefighting technologies.
