Leonardo has revealed that the next-generation AW169 light intermediate twin-engine helicopter is poised to enter the Mexican VIP/Corporate sector, further enhancing the popularity of this model among operators throughout Latin America and the world. This move solidifies Leonardo’s position in the global multiengine VIP helicopter market, which currently holds an approximate 40% market share.
A private operator in Mexico is set to initiate services with an AW169 this year, featuring a tailor-made configuration that harmonizes top-notch quality with exceptional comfort, utilizing the impressive cabin space that the model offers. Successful models such as the AW109 light twin series and the AW139 intermediate twin have demonstrated significant achievements in Latin America and Mexico for diverse applications, including VIP/Corporate transport. The introduction of the AW169 adds yet another option to cater to the changing demands of the regional market. For over thirty years, Leonardo has been the preferred OEM for Mexican clients engaged in VIP/executive transportation, having sold and maintained multiple AW109 variants in service. The AW169 presents existing light twin operators in Mexico with increased payload capacity, additional space, and enhanced comfort. Simultaneously, as the lighter counterpart to the prestigious AW139, the AW169 benefits from shared family traits, offering similar functionality in a more compact and lighter form with distinguished equipment and systems. The AW109 GrandNew and Trekker models will continue to provide outstanding capabilities for operators seeking high-performance light twin helicopters with extensive customization options.
The AW169 features numerous advanced technological elements in its rotor system, engines, avionics, transmission, and electric power generation and distribution systems. It comfortably seats up to ten passengers within its spacious, unobstructed cabin, which is equipped with a variety of specialized equipment and entertainment options. This aircraft is driven by dual Pratt & Whitney PW210A turboshafts, equipped with an auxiliary power unit (APU) mode that ensures the ongoing functionality of environmental control systems and radios, even when the rotors are not operational. The avionics suite of the AW169 introduces cutting-edge technology, including a fully digital NVG-compatible cockpit featuring three large displays and touchscreen controls with advanced 3D graphics capabilities for optimal situational awareness. Additionally, the AW169 becomes the first helicopter in its class to feature electric retractable landing gear, simplifying complexity and maintenance demands. This innovation complements the options for fixed landing gear and skid landing gear. A performance enhancement package is currently in development to provide customers with even greater capabilities under all conditions, including Hot&High scenarios. As a result, the AW169 achieves the best power-to-weight ratio in its class, making it exceptionally suited for operations in Mexico.
Since its certification in 2015, nearly 240 AW169 units have been ordered globally, serving a wide array of missions, including VIP/corporate transportation, EMS/SAR, law enforcement, firefighting, electronic news gathering, utility tasks, training, and military operations.
