The U.S. Navy has granted Raytheon Company $235 million for the production of Standard Missile-6 all-up round missiles and spare parts, dated January 23rd.
Raytheon is set to commence deliveries in 2018. These missiles will be utilized on Aegis cruisers and destroyers to bolster U.S. Navy fleet operations. This award funds the fourth consecutive year of full-rate production for the versatile missile, which has recently achieved major testing milestones and successes.
The contracted missiles will encompass an anti-surface capability, validated in early 2016 during a remarkably successful tactical demonstration event near Kauai’s shores. The SM-6 also established a new benchmark for maximum down-range and cross-range intercepts in over-the-horizon missions. This demonstration of combat capability has solidified SM-6 as a multi-mission missile with enhanced features in Anti-Air Warfare, Sea-Based Terminal, and Anti-Surface Warfare.
“The SM-6 encompasses three missions, making it the most cost-effective missile per defended area and threat scenario,” stated Mike Campisi, senior program director for Standard Missile-6. “The effectiveness of the SM-6 continues to exceed expectations and transcend its initial mission.”
The final assembly of SM-6 occurs at Raytheon’s cutting-edge production facility at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama.
About the Standard Missile-6
SM-6 provides a dependable, over-the-horizon defensive and offensive capability, leveraging the enduring advantages of the Standard Missile’s airframe and propulsion system, as well as the active radar systems from the Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missile.
The SM-6 employs both active and semi-active radar modes along with innovative fuzing techniques.
It integrates advanced signal processing and guidance control systems derived from Raytheon’s Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missile.
Initially deployed in 2013, the SM-6 has seen Raytheon deliver approximately 250 missiles to various military branches.
