Leonardo, a leader in aerospace, defense, and security, proudly announces the delivery of the first two M-345 jet trainer aircraft to the Italian Air Force.
This cutting-edge trainer is set to replace the aging fleet of 137 MB-339s, which has been in service since 1982, marking a significant upgrade in pilot training capabilities.
The Italian Air Force aims to procure approximately 45 M-345 trainer aircraft to fulfill its operational requirements. To date, they have already ordered 18 units from Leonardo.
Marco Zoff, Managing Director of Leonardo Aircraft, commented: “Leveraging our extensive experience in jet trainers, the M-345 will enhance training effectiveness while simultaneously reducing operational costs.”
This initial delivery represents a pivotal milestone, the culmination of a collaborative effort between Leonardo and the Italian Air Force.
The M-345 trainer is tailored to satisfy basic and advanced training needs, complementing the Italian Air Force’s existing M-346 aircraft for advanced pilot training.
According to Leonardo, the cockpit design of the M-345 mirrors that of frontline fighter jets, empowering trainees to refine their skills in various challenging mission scenarios.
Equipped with a Williams FJ44-4M-34 turbofan engine, the M-345 features a cockpit designed around HOTAS (Hands On Throttle-And-Stick) controls, enhancing pilot efficiency.
Notably, the M-345 also has operational capabilities, showcasing high-speed maneuverability even at elevated altitudes.
Additionally, the Italian Air Force has opted for the M-345 to be part of its acrobatic team, the “Frecce Tricolori.”
In recent developments, Leonardo successfully delivered a new HH-139B twin-engine helicopter to the Italian Air Force, further fortifying Italy’s defense capabilities.
