“Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Soars High with Modern AW139 Helicopter in Fleet Revamp”

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Welcomes First AW139 Helicopter

Leonardo proudly announces that Miami-Dade Fire Rescue (MDFR) has officially received its inaugural AW139 helicopter. The handover, which took place on October 13, featured a small ceremony at Miami Executive Airport (TMB) in Florida. Esteemed officials, including Mayor Carlos A. Giménez, addressed the attendees.

“As a former firefighter, I’m highly impressed with this world-class search-and-rescue helicopter,” stated Mayor Giménez. “Replacing outdated helicopters, the AW139 is a critical enhancement to Miami-Dade Fire Rescue’s fleet. This new aircraft will significantly improve safety and security for our fire rescue personnel and the lives they aim to protect.”

MDFR placed an order for four AW139 helicopters in December 2019, intended for various applications such as fire suppression, emergency medical services, and search and rescue operations. Each of these versatile helicopters is equipped with a cargo hook, rescue hoist, and Bambi bucket. The delivery of the remaining three aircraft is anticipated by the end of 2020.

With a commitment to safeguarding lives, property, and the environment, MDFR delivers professional, proactive fire rescue services essential for public health and safety. Operating from 71 fire-rescue stations throughout unincorporated Miami-Dade County, MDFR serves 29 municipalities and frequently provides mutual aid support to neighboring counties, including Monroe, Collier, Broward, and Lee.

A Unique Environment

Miami-Dade stands as the most populous county in Florida, home to over 2.7 million residents across more than 2,000 square miles—an area larger than Rhode Island and Delaware combined. The coral reefs and Everglades characterize the unique subtropical environment of South Florida, distinguishing it from any other region in the United States.

The AW139: A Global Success

Boasting over 1,000 deliveries, the AW139 helicopter represents the most successful global helicopter program of the past 15 years. It is utilized by over 280 operators in more than 70 countries for diverse missions, including fire suppression, emergency medical services, search and rescue, security, energy services, and private transportation. Leonardo is dedicated to enhancing community safety and supporting sustainable development globally through innovative technologies. Collaborating with governments and industry leaders for robust safety and security solutions is a key component of Leonardo’s BeTomorrow2030 Strategic Plan.

In the United States, notable AW139 customers include the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) and various state police departments in New Jersey and Maryland. Additionally, the U.S. Air Force (USAF) is set to introduce the AW139-based Boeing MH-139 to replace its UH-1N fleet.
