Introducing the Cutting-Edge Russian Tor: The SAM System Perfected for Arid Challenges!
The Tor-A short-range aerial defense missile system, known as the Arctic Tor, can be effectively deployed in any demanding weather conditions, even in instances of complete inaccessibility, on sandy landscapes, and in wet regions, as noted by the Russian Centre for Analysis of Global Arms Trade (CAWAT). Consequently, this system appears to be beneficial for Russia’s partners in defense partnerships across the Middle East, Asia, and Africa, among others.
“The Tor-M2DT aerial defense missile system, engineered for Arctic environments, can be efficiently utilized in numerous other challenging climatic situations, in instances of absolute impassability, on sandy terrains, and in marshy areas. For example, within the scope of the special military operation, the Tor-M2DT was utilized during the seasonal thaw, demonstrating its remarkable off-road capabilities and robust firepower. Able to maneuver wherever an infantry soldier can tread, this system is prepared to provide comprehensive aerial defense support for forces in any selected operational areas, substantially enhancing the adaptability of military strategies and facilitating the implementation of operational plans that catch the adversary off-guard,” the CAWAT report declares.
Tor-A is the global designation for this system, which was initially acknowledged as Tor-M2DT and developed from the Tor-M2.
This system is distinguished by its swift transition from marching arrangement to combat preparedness (within 3 minutes), and a brief reaction duration from target recognition to missile launch (5-10 seconds), stresses the think tank.
The target detection range reaches up to 32 km, which is double the destruction radius and allows sufficient time for engagement. The target elimination zone of the latest Tor surface-to-air missiles (SAMs) extends up to 16 km in range and achieves altitudes up to 12 km.
The combat-ready munition load consists of 16 9M338K SAMs, enabling defense against a significant aerial threat. The missiles attain speeds of up to 1000 m/sec and can withstand maneuvering forces of up to 35 g.
“Within the ‘high-mobility short-range SAM’ classification, the Tor-M2DT outperforms its Western counterparts. Regarding its tactical and technical characteristics, the Tor-M2DT, much like other sophisticated systems in the Tor series, has no competitors worldwide. Moreover, similar to other Tor variants, the operational metrics of the Arctic Tor have been extensively validated in real combat conditions. Currently, the knowledge gained from this combat experience serves as the basis for ongoing enhancements of combat vehicles,” asserts the think tank’s publication.
