Introducing the AW109 Trekker: Leonardo’s Bold Move Into Indonesia’s Skies

Leonardo has declared today the handover of an AW109 Trekker light twin helicopter to FlyKomala from Indonesia, signifying the introduction of this model into the nation’s aviation sector. The aircraft is intended for a variety of operations, such as passenger transportation, utility tasks, disaster relief, and emergency support missions. FlyKomala will gain advantages from superior performance and payload capacity, spacious cabin area, a durable airframe, and advanced avionics, all aimed at improving mission efficiency and safety in the challenging environmental and climatic conditions of the region.

This recent delivery contributes to the success of Leonardo’s light twin models in Indonesia, complementing the AW109 Grand and GrandNew variants. Leonardo’s civil helicopter fleet in Indonesia now includes almost 20 aircraft of diverse types dedicated to corporate, search and rescue (SAR), and utility transport operations. Asia has demonstrated to be a vital market for the AW109 Trekker, selected in various nations for multiple applications, including emergency medical services (EMS), utility, and law enforcement operations.

The AW109 Trekker retains the AW109 Grand airframe, spacious cabin, and high performance while providing enhanced payload capabilities at a competitive price, thus confirming its suitability to satisfy the rigorous demands of operators concerning capabilities and cost efficiency. The AW109 Trekker is the latest enhancement in Leonardo’s helicopter lineup and the company’s inaugural light twin featuring skid landing gear. This model is fitted with a state-of-the-art Genesys Aerosystems glass cockpit that can be tailored to customer specifications—accommodating either one or two pilots, and configured for either VFR or IFR operations. To date, over 70 AW109 Trekkers have been sold to clients across the globe for various missions, contributing to an impressive total of around 1,500 AW109 series units sold worldwide.
