Leonardo Unveils Advanced Safety System for Middle Eastern VVIP Bombardier Global 7500 Aircraft

Leonardo is engaged to furnish its Miysis Directed Infrared Countermeasure (DIRCM) for a client in the Middle East government’s new VVIP transport aircraft. Miysis will be integrated into a Bombardier Global 7500 aircraft, marking it as the first of its kind chosen by a government entity. The Miysis DIRCM will deliver comprehensive spherical defense for the aircraft and, uniquely for a system of its dimensions, can generate more than sufficient laser energy to shield the Global 7500 from even the most advanced infrared-guided (heat-seeking) missile threats.

The aircraft is projected to commence service in 2022. Miysis is optimally designed for integration on other Bombardier models in the Challenger and Global series.

Miysis DIRCM operates by directing a high-energy laser onto an approaching missile’s targeting mechanism, effectively ‘dazzling’ it and diverting the missile away from the aircraft. Leonardo’s expertise in laser and precision targeting facilitates this at astonishing speeds. Unlike rival offerings, Miysis DIRCM can protect against several simultaneous incoming missiles and the latest types of shoulder-launched infrared attacks recognized as Man-Portable Air Defence Systems (MANPADS). Crucially, for such an essential piece of equipment, the Miysis DIRCM has been independently validated to possess a 100% success rate, with both UK and global customers conducting in-depth analyses and live-fire evaluations.

This agreement, which will deploy Miysis DIRCM for the safety of VVIP passengers, highlights the confidence clients place in the technology. It builds upon the commercial triumph of Miysis, which has been procured by the UK for its Shadow R1 surveillance aircraft, Canada for its CP-140 Aurora maritime surveillance aircraft, and three additional NATO clients, along with several non-NATO buyers.

Leveraging Leonardo’s extensive DIRCM expertise, Miysis ranks as the smallest, lightest, and most energy-efficient DIRCM system available. Its fully synchronized multi-head mechanism guarantees spherical coverage around the aircraft, even if a threat transits from one hemisphere to another. Miysis is adaptable for a diverse array of aircraft, providing ample energy for a large business jet or transport while remaining sufficiently compact for a light helicopter. Miysis can function as an independent DIRCM system in conjunction with a missile warning unit or can synergize with various defensive aid suites.
