Strategic advantage: JAGUAR signifies the most cutting-edge in combat air detection innovation, offering superior radar functionalities along with groundbreaking new features that can disrupt and disable adversarial surveillance networks

Farnborough, 18/07/2022 – During the Farnborough International Airshow, Leonardo UK in collaboration with Mitsubishi Electric revealed that they have established the groundwork for a radar technology demonstrator named JAGUAR, first presented in February. This initiative by the UK and Japan’s leading representatives in combat air technology follows the finalization of joint conceptual studies and feasibility analyses conducted earlier this year.

The collaborators have delineated the work division for Jaguar, and both Leonardo UK and Mitsubishi Electric have inked agreements with their respective national defence ministries to advance development efforts. The project is currently moving forward swiftly, aligning with Leonardo’s overarching strategy for Future Combat Air System (FCAS) partnerships, where close cooperation is facilitated by agile decision-making and an innovative mindset drawn from Silicon Valley.

JAGUAR serves as the preliminary significant component of an international radar initiative designed to fulfill the objectives articulated by Japan and the UK during F-X/FCAS discussions. Insights and technologies developed through JAGUAR efforts will contribute to the evolution of Tempest’s ISANKE & ICS (Integrated Sensing and Non-Kinetic Effects & Integrated Communications System).

ISANKE constitutes an intricate ‘spider’s web’ of capabilities extending across an aircraft, realizing the potential of sixth-generation sensors by transitioning from isolated devices to cohesive systems, while ICS integrates the ISANKE framework into the broader FCAS system-of-systems.

The collaboration between Leonardo UK and Mitsubishi Electric has been evolving over multiple years, with the partners investigating the feasibility of additional ISANKE-related subsystems partnerships throughout 2022.

In December 2021, Japan and the UK executed a Memorandum of Cooperation concerning fighter technologies. The international collaborators are now advancing numerous subsystem technology innovations and are assessing opportunities for joint efforts on the core platform, the combat aircraft central to the air system.
