“Patriot 2048: Pioneering the Future of Interceptor Missile Production in Germany with MBDA and Raytheon”
Patriot™ is becoming increasingly vital as the foundation of NATO and German aerial defense. Raytheon Missiles & Defense and MBDA are now enhancing their collaboration and have formulated a strategic blueprint for the manufacturing of Patriot interceptor missiles in Germany. This initiative will empower Germany to address the existing threat landscape and to utilize Patriot within the Bundeswehr until at least 2048.
In the COMLOG joint venture, both firms have been collaborating for over three decades to make Patriot accessible to the Bundeswehr, ensure Patriot’s operational readiness, and modernize the systems. For Patriot to maintain its status as a credible deterrent in the present threat environment, it is essential to preserve, enhance, and advance the system’s capabilities and combat efficiency. With COMLOG serving as a service provider for the armed forces, RMD and MBDA are strengthening their alliance for the upcoming challenges.
Germany aims to secure a prominent position in ground-based aerial defense within NATO. COMLOG already plays a pivotal role in the maintenance and logistics of the Patriot air and missile defense system. The partners have now established a roadmap that will facilitate the fulfillment of German requirements for Patriot GEM-T interceptor missiles through domestic production. The timeline also creates opportunities for supplying German-made GEM-Ts to other Patriot allies in Europe.
Thomas Gottschild, Managing Director of MBDA Germany: “Patriot plays a crucial and forward-thinking role in the defense of Germany and Europe. With our partner RMD, COMLOG as an established joint enterprise of our firms, the testing and reference facility in Freinhausen, and the capabilities at our company locations, we possess optimal conditions to support Patriot together until the year 2048.”
The Guidance Enhanced Missile, abbreviated as GEM-T, is one of the Patriot™ variants accessible to both the US armed forces and international clients. The GEM-T missile offers an enhanced capability to target tactical ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, or hostile aircraft, complementing the PAC-3 missile.
“Our successful COMLOG joint venture with MBDA plays a significant role in missile maintenance and logistics,” stated Tom Laliberty, President Land Warfare & Air Defense at Raytheon Missile & Defense. “By enabling COMLOG to manufacture GEM-T in Germany, we are also expanding the capacity to deliver this mission-critical intercept system to Patriot partner nations across Europe.”
