Mistral ATLAS-RC: The Future of Short Range Air Defence

At HOMSEC 2017, MBDA proudly introduced the Mistral ATLAS-RC, an innovative short range air defence system.

This cutting-edge system is designed in response to the modernization needs of the Spanish Ministry of Defence’s existing Mistral launchers. It features a remotely controlled turret equipped with two advanced Mistral missiles and a state-of-the-art thermal sight. The Mistral ATLAS-RC can be seamlessly mounted on light armored vehicles like the URO VAMTAC ST5, enhancing the Spanish Army’s tactical capabilities.

Unlike the standard Mistral ATLAS system, which requires manual operation, the ATLAS-RC system offers enhanced crew protection. Operators can manage it from the comfort of the vehicle’s cabin or remotely via a fully mobile workstation. Its 360° revolving motorized turret ensures optimal operational flexibility while keeping operational costs low.

Compatible with all variants of the Mistral missile, ATLAS-RC takes full advantage of its proven performance metrics. Features such as fire-and-forget capability, high reliability, and exceptional kill probability against both fixed and rotary wing aircraft and UAVs position it as a leader in modern air defense technology. The Mistral includes an advanced imaging IR seeker, providing superior resistance to infrared countermeasures and allowing engagement of low-IR signature targets.

MBDA’s Mistral ATLAS-RC presents a robust solution for today’s air defense challenges, combining firepower, rapid response, and day/night engagement capabilities with high tactical and strategic mobility—all while ensuring crew safety.

This versatile system can easily integrate into a coordinated fire control network and adapt to any chosen communication system. Designed for minimal crew workload, ATLAS-RC can be operated by a single soldier, making it compatible with a variety of high-mobility armored and non-armored combat vehicles. Additionally, it is air-transportable on aircraft such as the A400M and C130, enhancing its operational reach.

MBDA Spain will lead the development, production, and support of the Mistral ATLAS-RC, utilizing the extensive expertise of the MBDA group in remote-controlled launcher systems and leveraging the capabilities of the Spanish defense industry supply chain.
