MBDA Inc. Secures Exciting Contract: Scaling Up Production of the Innovative Diamond Back® Wing for Small Diameter Bombs (SDB-1)

MBDA Inc. Awarded Contract to Produce Diamond Back® Wing Assemblies

Arlington, Virginia – MBDA Inc. is excited to announce a significant contract award from Boeing for the production of up to 21,000 Diamond Back® Wing Assemblies. These components are vital for the Small Diameter Bomb (SDB-1), following a recent award to Boeing by the U.S. Air Force for further SDB-1 production.

The Diamond Back Wing Assembly, an essential element of Boeing’s innovative Small Diameter Bomb, features a unique tandem wing design aimed at enhancing maneuverability and extending the weapon’s range beyond 60 nautical miles. This advancement greatly improves pilot safety and operational capabilities. The SDB-1 is recognized as a cutting-edge precision-guided glide bomb, allowing aircraft to carry more weapons and effectively strike multiple targets in a single combat mission.

In response to the contract announcement, John Pranzatelli, CEO of MBDA Inc., stated: “This significant award reflects our robust partnership with Boeing and our exceptional track record in delivering wing kits. As the MBDA Inc. team in Huntsville expands, we are committed to satisfying customer demands with punctuality and within budget. Beyond Diamond Back, we aim to introduce our advanced portfolio of precision-guided munitions and innovative technologies to the U.S. market.”

MBDA Inc. has received accolades, including three Boeing Performance Excellence Awards, while successfully producing over 18,000 Diamond Back Wing Assemblies, reaching the 20,000th unit milestone in September 2017.

The assembly and testing of the Diamond Back Wing Assemblies will continue at MBDA Inc.’s facility in Huntsville, Alabama. With the increasing demand for these advanced wing assemblies, MBDA Inc. is actively hiring new staff and expanding its facilities.
