MBDA Unveils Mistral Missile’s Cutting-Edge Anti-Surface Powers

Mistral Missile Demonstration and Capabilities

In late 2018, MBDA successfully showcased the effectiveness of the Mistral missile against fast boats, including Fast Inshore Attack Craft (FIACs). The demonstration drew the attention of multiple international delegations, featuring a SIMBAD-RC automated naval turret that targeted a rapidly moving semi-rigid boat located over 3 kilometers offshore. This scenario simulated the self-protection of vessels against asymmetric threats such as commando or terrorist attacks.

Advanced Technology in Air Defence

Currently serving in the French armed forces, the Mistral missile is designed with an advanced air defence system featuring an imaging infrared seeker. This state-of-the-art technology enables the missile to engage low thermal signature targets, including UAVs, missiles, and high-speed boats, from considerable distances while offering superior resistance to countermeasures.

Versatile Naval Defence with SIMBAD-RC

The SIMBAD-RC stands out as a remotely-operated, very short-range naval air defence system with impressive capabilities against various threats, ranging from combat aircraft to anti-ship missiles and even smaller items like UAVs. Its ease of installation allows for rapid deployment on smaller units or support vessels, enhancing their self-defence capabilities. Moreover, it provides robust reinforcement to larger surface vessels, ensuring an effective defence strategy.

The turret is equipped to handle two ready-to-fire Mistral missiles. Operating remotely from the vessel’s command center enables the operator to remain protected while maintaining a longer operational readiness even during combat alerts.
