MBDA Unveils Ambitious Plans for Next-Gen Combat Missile Tailored for Tiger Helicopters

Florence Parly, the French Minister for the Armed Forces, has unveiled plans for the development of the Future Tactical Air-to-Surface Missile (MAST-F). This innovative armament will serve as the primary missile for the French Army’s Tiger combat helicopter. MBDA was chosen for this critical project after presenting its cutting-edge MHT/MLP concept (Missile Haut de Trame / Missile Longue Portée). This high-tier and long-range mobile missile concept is rooted in the advanced technology of the mid-range MMP, recognized globally as the first fifth-generation land combat missile.

The MHT/MLP missile stands out due to its impressive operational effectiveness. Weighing 20% less than comparable missiles, it achieves a remarkable weight reduction of nearly 100 kg for the Tiger helicopter, allowing it to carry up to eight missiles in a combat configuration. This reduction not only enhances the Tiger’s fuel capacity but also extends its combat endurance, resulting in significantly increased “playtime”.

With a formidable range exceeding 8 km, the MHT/MLP maintains its performance even when launched from a stationary platform at low altitudes. Its multi-effect warhead is capable of neutralizing a diverse array of targets, from modern battle tanks to fortified combat structures. The missile operates effectively day or night and supports beyond-line-of-sight (BLOS) engagements. A two-way data link transmits high-resolution images from the missile’s visible and infrared opto-electronic seeker back to the operator. This feature empowers the Tiger’s crew to select the missile’s impact point or change targets mid-flight, making it ideal for dynamic battlefield scenarios.

Regarding the program’s initiation, MBDA CEO Eric Béranger stated: “The MHT/MLP missile integrates advanced technologies developed with DGA support, alongside proven components from the MMP. This positions it as a leading solution in today’s tactical land combat missile landscape. Its unmatched flexibility and reduced development risks are vital for modern armed forces. Moreover, with its all-European design authority, the MHT/MLP aligns perfectly with the strategic autonomy goals of France and the European Union.” He further noted, “Over the next five years, the development and production of this new missile are expected to create nearly 350 jobs annually, and around 250 jobs in France during the initial decade of production. This initiative plays a crucial role in sustaining the national industrial and technological base, particularly in the Centre region.
