MBDA Takes Charge of Revamping the Iconic Storm Shadow / SCALP Missile
The UK and French Ministries of Defence have officially contracted MBDA for the mid-life refurbishment of the Storm Shadow / SCALP EG cruise missiles. This strategic decision aims to enhance the operational superiority of this vital weapon system, ensuring readiness against evolving threats into the next decade.
This initiative marks a significant milestone in Franco-British defense cooperation, building upon the strong partnership established with the launch of the Storm Shadow / SCALP program back in 1996. The refurbishment program includes a comprehensive development phase and will be validated through a series of rigorous flight trials anticipated in 2019. Refurbished missiles are expected to be operationally available for both the French and UK armed forces by early 2020.
Antoine Bouvier, CEO of MBDA, stated: “The Storm Shadow / SCALP program holds great significance for MBDA, as it was the catalyst for establishing Matra BAe Dynamics. This organizational model has since become a benchmark within the entire MBDA group. Our unique approach continues to offer customers in Europe and global markets access to unparalleled operational capabilities, exemplified not only by SCALP / Storm Shadow but also by the Meteor and Aster missile systems.”
Dave Armstrong, MBDA’s Executive Group Director for Sales and Business Development and UK Managing Director, remarked: “This collaborative investment by France and the UK guarantees that Storm Shadow / SCALP will be sustained at optimal levels for the foreseeable future. It is a testament to the confidence both countries place in MBDA’s capability to successfully execute European Defence programs.”
