Oshkosh Defense, proclaimed on the 18th of August that the U.S. Marine Corps has attained Milestone C endorsement to initiate Full Rate Production (FRP) of the P-19 Replacement (P-19R) Aircraft Rescue Fire Fighting (ARFF) vehicle initiative. This endorsement signifies a significant achievement for the $192 million P-19R ARFF agreement, which was granted to Oshkosh in May 2013 to substitute the P-19A fleet.
“The P-19R initiative signifies a technological advancement for the U.S. Marine Corps and its capability to react swiftly and proficiently to aircraft crises,” stated Pat Williams, Oshkosh Defense vice president and general manager of Army and Marine Corps programs. “The Oshkosh P-19R offers Marines enhanced off-road capacity, velocity, and portability for a comprehensive range of firefighting tasks whether stationed at a military facility or an expeditionary airstrip.”
Following the granting of the P-19R contract, Oshkosh has successfully accomplished all necessary governmental development assessments and evaluations, along with readiness reviews needed to secure Milestone C and transition the initiative into Full Rate Production (FRP). Overall, Oshkosh will furnish 164 P-19R ARFFs through 2019. The P-19R is set to replace the P-19A fleet, which was introduced in 1984 and is approaching the end of its operational lifespan.
The Oshkosh P-19R ARFF amalgamates the industry’s most sophisticated firefighting apparatus and vehicle technologies to arrive at emergency scenes more rapidly, with enhanced capabilities to manage a variety of emergency scenarios upon arrival. The P-19R offers unmatched acceleration levels with its 600 horsepower engine, permitting speeds of up to 70 mph. The P-19R achieves the “gold standard” performance in off-road conditions with the Oshkosh TAK-4® independent suspension system. TAK-4 has been utilized across more than 20,000 military-class vehicles, providing 16 inches of independent wheel travel to enhance all-terrain capability for off-runway emergencies. Additionally, the TAK-4 system supports the payload capacity required to carry 1,000 gallons of water, 130 gallons of foam solution, and 500 lbs of auxiliary firefighting agent. The roof and bumper turrets combined can expel up to 750 gallons per minute.
The Oshkosh P-19R encompasses Oshkosh’s Command Zone integrated control and diagnostics system. This fully-automated system grants access to essential vehicle information, enables Marines to repair and troubleshoot vehicles, view real-time performance data, and remotely access diagnostic information. The P-19R is also equipped with advanced Striker ARFF vehicle firefighting systems from Oshkosh Airport Products LLC, the leading producer of ARFF vehicles in the industry. The P-19R will be showcased next month at the Modern Day Marine military expo at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia.
