MDA Partners with Raytheon to Pioneer Groundbreaking Counter-Hypersonic Missile Technology

The Missile Defense Agency has opted for Raytheon Missiles & Defense, a subsidiary of Raytheon Technologies (NYSE: RTX), to further develop a groundbreaking counter-hypersonic missile, known as the Glide Phase Interceptor (GPI). This innovative system aims to intercept hypersonic weapons during the glide phase of their trajectory, offering the U.S. and its allies an enhanced layer of protection against regional hypersonic missile threats.

This fixed-price modification of the Other Transaction Agreement, worth $41 million, raises the total contract value to $62 million. It enables Raytheon Missiles & Defense to further advance its GPI design utilizing cutting-edge materials and technologies essential for countering hypersonic threats. This phase will also complete system requirements and expedite development timelines.

“Our GPI leverages established missile defense technologies as its core,” stated Tay Fitzgerald, president of Strategic Missile Defense at Raytheon Missiles & Defense. “By employing digital engineering and utilizing high technology readiness level components and subsystems already integrated into Standard Missile and hypersonic initiatives, we can swiftly progress in the development of this new interceptor.”

Raytheon Missiles & Defense is harnessing mature technologies from its existing portfolio to create efficiencies, decrease qualification timelines, and demonstrate the GPI capabilities as rapidly as possible.

Raytheon Technologies’ missile defense portfolio amalgamates sensors, interceptors, and command and control networks to detect and neutralize a diverse range of threats. With over 50 years of battle-tested interceptor development, integration, and production expertise, the company plays a pivotal role in many air and missile defense systems deployed by the U.S. and its allies. By upgrading its missile interceptors, directed energy, and cyber technologies, Raytheon Technologies is pioneering advanced counter-hypersonic solutions.

The information included in this press release reflects Raytheon’s perspective and does not suggest endorsement from the Missile Defense Agency.
