Morocco Explores Partnership with Turkey for Akinci Drone Acquisition
Morocco is engaging in discussions with Turkey to obtain Akinci unmanned aerial systems (UAS).
The Akinci represents a sophisticated UAS engineered to assist combat aircraft. It comes equipped with satellite communication technologies, air-to-air radar capabilities, electronic support mechanisms, and a distinctive radar system designed to prevent collisions.
This UAS boasts a wingspan of 20 meters and measures a little over 12 meters in length. Furthermore, it possesses the ability to transport an overall payload of 6 tons, including 1.5 tons of munitions.
Akinci is also integrated with advanced artificial intelligence (AI) features and specialized systems for signal processing and sensing, enabling it to identify obstacles and accurately recognize targets, which enhances decision-making processes.
If this agreement is concluded successfully, it would mark a significant advancement in fortifying Morocco’s military capabilities, particularly in the domain of aerial combat. The Akinci would become the second UAS that Morocco acquires from Turkey, following the Bayraktar TB2, which was incorporated into the Moroccan Air Force in 2021.
The procurement of the Akinci would also reflect the deepening military partnership between Morocco and Turkey. The two nations have previously collaborated on several initiatives, including the transaction of Bayraktar TB2 UAS to Morocco.
