Norway Strengthens Sky Shield with Cutting-Edge NASAMS Air Defense Systems

The Norwegian administration has commissioned new NASAMS air defence systems from Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace (KONGSBERG), aimed at enhancing the nation’s defensive capabilities against aerial threats. This agreement is valued at around NOK 1.4 billion, with anticipated deliveries slated for 2026-2027.

The arrangement with the Norwegian Defence Material Agency includes advanced multi-missile canister launchers and newly established Fire Distribution Centers for NASAMS, replacing equipment that was previously sent to Ukraine. The upcoming delivery will equip Norway with the cutting-edge generation of NASAMS, designed to address both current and emerging threats.

“These are crucial investments that safeguard the nation. The conflict in Ukraine has highlighted the necessity of air defence, and prior to Christmas, the Norwegian government was capable of presenting a historic order for air defence to the Norwegian Armed Forces. We have initiated exceptional measures to expedite this procurement. The agreement for the reacquisition of donated equipment is the first step forward,” stated Norway’s Defence Minister Bjørn Arild Gram.

“An advanced air defence system is strategically significant for Norway’s military capabilities and essential for protecting our national security interests. Norway was the pioneer NASAMS user, and we are excited to continue this strong partnership with ongoing and future deliveries,” remarked Eirik Lie, President of Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace.

The pioneering Norwegian Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System, or NASAMS, was delivered to the Norwegian armed forces during the 1990s. Currently, there are 13 nations within the NASAMS user group.

NASAMS’ modularity and open architecture facilitate the seamless integration of new technologies and additional capabilities, ensuring that the system remains adaptable to evolving threats and missions throughout its operational lifespan. NASAMS represents one of the most versatile solutions available on the market, addressing a broad spectrum of air defence requirements.

“For us, supporting Ukraine with essential materials is vital, while concurrently ensuring a well-equipped Norway. This project has been completed in half the usual timeline, thanks to the efforts from all involved parties, which I view as a positive advancement,” expressed Gro Jære, Director of the Norwegian Defence Material Agency.

KONGSBERG has committed to enhancing its production capabilities, while simultaneously bolstering relationships with various Norwegian and international suppliers, which play a crucial role in maintaining global defence readiness.
