Swiss Air Force Boosts Transport Capabilities with Cutting-Edge Helicopter Overhaul by RUAG

RUAG to Modernize Swiss Air Force Cougar Helicopters

RUAG has announced an exciting initiative to enhance the capabilities of eight Cougar helicopters within the Swiss Air Force’s transport helicopter fleet. The agreement for this modernization project was formalized in December in Bern, involving representatives from both RUAG and armasuisse.

State-of-the-Art Upgrades for Enhanced Performance

The upgrade is slated for completion at RUAG’s facilities in Emmen by mid-2022, focusing on incorporating cutting-edge technology into the helicopters. First introduced in 1998, these helicopters will undergo significant upgrades to their electronic flight control, navigation, and communication systems. Key enhancements will include new flight management computers, a precision navigation system for instrument flights, and a collision avoidance system designed to alert pilots to nearby aircraft.

Additionally, RUAG will introduce a unique system that emits an audible signal when the rotorcraft deviates from a predefined flight level. The upgrade package will also include helmet-mounted displays that allow pilots to view crucial flight data directly on their visors, along with the latest radio equipment and satellite communication systems to ensure safety and improve operational efficiency.

Advanced Self-Defense Systems

The helicopters will be fitted with the advanced IDAS-3 self-defense system, which notifies the crew about radar, laser, and electro-optical threats, as well as incoming missiles. The system is designed to deploy countermeasures, including decoys, enhancing the helicopters’ defense capabilities.

Thorough Overhaul and Maintenance

In addition to upgrading the technology, RUAG will conduct a comprehensive overhaul of the helicopters. Experts will disassemble the aircraft, inspect all components for wear and damage, and carry out necessary repairs or replacements. The goal is to return the helicopters to the Swiss Air Force in a condition that meets or exceeds new standards.

Philipp Berner, Senior Vice President of Military Aviation at RUAG, emphasizes, “Ensuring the readiness of the Swiss helicopter fleet is pivotal to our mission. This upgrade will equip the Air Force with a state-of-the-art transport helicopter system for years to come and thus ensure mission success.”

Broader Fleet Overview

The Swiss Air Force’s transport capabilities also include 15 Super Puma helicopters, procured in the late 1980s, which were previously modernized by RUAG between 2011 and 2014. These transport helicopters serve as essential tools for disaster relief missions, search and rescue operations, and logistical transport of personnel and materials, both within Switzerland and internationally.
