Raytheon Unleashes StormBreaker®: F-15 Eagle Gets Cutting-Edge Smart Weapon Approval
Raytheon Missiles & Defense, a prominent division of Raytheon Technologies (NYSE: RTX), has announced that the StormBreaker® smart weapon is officially approved for deployment on the F-15E by the U.S. Air Force’s Air Combat Command. This decisive fielding enables F-15E squadrons to utilize StormBreaker for mission readiness and execution.
“StormBreaker empowers pilots with an unparalleled operational capability,” stated Paul Ferraro, Vice President of Air Power at Raytheon Missiles & Defense. “This smart weapon provides airmen with a strategic edge, allowing them to engage both maritime and land targets effectively even in challenging weather conditions.”
The StormBreaker features a state-of-the-art multimode seeker that utilizes imaging infrared, millimeter wave radar, and semi-active laser guidance, in conjunction with GPS and an inertial navigation system.
“This weapon has demonstrated its functionality in a multitude of rigorous testing scenarios, proving its effectiveness against various targets in extreme environments,” remarked Cristy Stagg, StormBreaker Program Director at Raytheon Missiles & Defense. “With its advanced multimode seeker and real-time datalink, StormBreaker negates the impact of adverse weather conditions.”
Due to StormBreaker’s compact design, fewer aircraft can engage the same number of targets compared to larger munitions, thereby enhancing operational efficiency. It boasts an impressive range of over 40 miles, ensuring aircrews spend minimal time in jeopardy while targeting mobile threats.
The smart weapon is set for initial deployment on the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet for the U.S. Navy later this year, followed by integration on the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, marking the next steps in the program.
