Rheinmetall Expands Horizons: Acquisition of Dutch Startup REEQ Boosts Light Hybrid Vehicle Innovations

Rheinmetall has purchased the Dutch startup REEQ, thus enhancing its vehicle lineup to feature cutting-edge lightweight hybrid automobiles. At the onset of March 2024, the technology conglomerate’s Dutch subsidiary Rheinmetall Defence Nederland B.V., part of the Vehicle Systems Division, secured 100% of the equity in the Dutch start-up REEQ. Rheinmetall is therefore broadening its portfolio of lightweight tactical automobiles and advancing towards hybrid technology featuring a fully electric drivetrain in a defense vehicle. Both entities have agreed to maintain confidentiality regarding the acquisition cost.

Through its vehicles, REEQ has introduced a new era of mobility that merges tactical transportation with a mobile energy solution (microgrid) and is entirely equipped for autonomy. This technology has been developed and manufactured in the Netherlands.

At present, REEQ’s vehicle assortment includes an Unmanned Ground Vehicle (UGV), a side-by-side buggy, and a quad, all sharing the identical fully electric drive system. By acquiring REEQ, Rheinmetall can cater to the Dutch and European markets in the realm of lightweight tactical mobility, both manned and unmanned, combined with a microgrid solution. Rheinmetall’s industrial capabilities and the inventive spirit of a start-up enhance each other. Within the Rheinmetall Group, REEQ will maintain its identity as a start-up in the development sector. The ongoing enhancement and mass production of these vehicles will also occur in the Netherlands.
