French Defense Secures 109 Advanced CAESAR MkII Howitzers from Nexter, a KNDS Visionary!

The DGA has revealed the acquisition of 109 CAESAR 6×6 MkII, an upgraded variant that is presently in the development phase. This procurement, outlined in the 2024-2030 defense programming law (LPM), will initially succeed the AUF1 self-propelled howitzer as it concludes its operational tenure and systematically retire the CAESAR 6×6 MkI from service. Consequently, the French artillery will gain an unparalleled capability since the deployment of the CAESAR 6×6 system in 2008. Furthermore, this order encompasses support provisions for the CAESAR MkII during its initial two years of operation. The advancement of the CAESAR MkII commenced in December 2021, as confirmed by French Prime Minister Jean Castex in Roanne.

The DGA and Nexter, a subsidiary of KNDS, have formalized a framework contract permitting France to procure CAESAR systems and associated support services for allied nations.

An entirely re-engineered chassis

The key enhancements of the CAESAR MkII pertain to protection, mobility, and communication capabilities:

  • The cabin’s armor has been bolstered against mines and ballistic threats to withstand improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and small-caliber fire. This specification was established during France’s recent missions in Afghanistan and the Sahel region.
  • The mobility of the CAESAR MkII is upgraded with a new engine (460 HP as opposed to the previous 215 HP), an automatic transmission, and a redesigned chassis supplied by Arquus.
  • State-of-the-art fire control software equips the CAESAR MkII, while its cabin is primed for incorporating the forthcoming generation of NCT-t radio systems.

The CAESAR MkII is armed with the same artillery system as the reliable CAESAR MkI, which has proven its dependability and effectiveness in both low and high-intensity combat scenarios.
