ASELSAN Introduces Revolutionary Enhancements for Global MEKO Frigate Fleet

ASELSAN has successfully completed the BARBAROS-Class Frigates Mid-Life Upgrade (BARBAROS-MLU) Project, representing a remarkable milestone by enhancing 21 systems on TCG ORUÇREİS with innovative, domestically-produced solutions. Driven by the goal to meet the unique needs of both national and international clients, the firm has developed unparalleled expertise, especially in naval advancements.

ASELSAN, Türkiye’s leading defense corporation, has set a new benchmark in naval platform upgrading through the effective achievement of the provisional acceptance of the BARBAROS-Class Frigates Mid-Life Upgrade (BARBAROS-MLU) Project, recognized as the largest MEKO-class frigate modernization endeavor worldwide. Launched by the Turkish Presidency of Defence Industries, the BARBAROS-MLU Project aims to enhance the capabilities of the BARBAROS-Class Frigates, vital to the Turkish Naval Forces’ defense strategy.

Offering a comprehensive combat system integration solution tailored to the distinct specifications of the Turkish Naval Forces, a total of 21 systems aboard TCG ORUÇREİS have been improved under ASELSAN’s primary contractorship. Among the significant enhancements are radar, electronic warfare, integrated combat and satellite communications, electro-optic, weapon and fire control, as well as underwater and navigation support systems; all of which substantially augment the operational capabilities of TCG ORUÇREİS.

Moreover, in addition to upgrading weapon and electronic frameworks, ASELSAN undertook extensive redesign initiatives, such as modifications to the main mast, assessments of above and below deck configurations, and comprehensive analyses concerning marine stability, HVAC structures, electrical distribution, and electromagnetic compatibility.
