Damen Launches Revolutionary Multi-Task Support Vessel to Tackle Modern Defence and Security Demands

Damen Shipyards Group has introduced an innovative vessel design tailored to contemporary defense and security needs. The Multi-Purpose Support Ship (MPSS) has been collaboratively developed with the Portuguese Navy, the ship’s inaugural customer. It serves as a solution addressing the growing utilization of drone technology in warfare and reconnaissance. Besides its fundamental purpose, the MPSS is engineered to accommodate a diverse array of supplementary tasks, encompassing auxiliary functions.

Damen has initiated the assembly of the first craft of this state-of-the-art design. The MPSS series, available in 7000 and 9000-ton variants, merges the vision of the Portuguese Navy with Damen’s established shipbuilding methodology, employing standardized solutions wherever feasible. Consequently, the vessel can be fabricated swiftly, providing a trustworthy and budget-friendly platform.

While the electronic, communication, and navigation apparatus installed on the MPSS will be military-grade equipment, the vessel will also incorporate commercially available technology. This includes, for instance, mission-specific equipment modules, enabling the craft to achieve its multi-functional capabilities.

Thus, when not engaged in its primary mission, the MPSS can be utilized for an extensive range of functions including drone management (aerial, maritime, and underwater), conducting amphibious assistance, emergency/disaster response, search & rescue operations, diving support, executing submarine rescues, and helicopter activities.

The MPSS 7000 measures 107 x 20 meters. It is anticipated that it will be manned by a crew of 48 personnel, with supplementary facilities for up to 100 specialized staff and additional temporary accommodations for 42 individuals, for instance during a disaster relief mission. The MPSS 9000 is 130 x 20 meters and is capable of executing an even broader spectrum of operations.

Thanks to its modular design approach, the vessel can be employed throughout the year and is also straightforward to maintain. The MPSS Series can remain operational at sea for durations of at least 45 days. All these elements enhance the vessel’s overall worth, significantly boosting its availability.

Piet van Rooij, Commercial Manager of Damen’s Defence and Security division, commented on the new vessel, “The MPSS series is a direct response to the rising incorporation of drone technology that we observe in modern warfare and surveillance scenarios. We recognized that such capabilities would become increasingly vital for nations seeking to uphold their sovereignty. Simultaneously, this is a multi-purpose vessel capable of a wide range of additional operations, thus delivering value for taxpayers. This concept is further realized through the use of commercially available technology, ensuring the economical construction of a dependable platform. We’re eagerly anticipating the opportunity to showcase this vessel, including at upcoming exhibitions, in the months ahead.
